Give the Gift of Music!

WHAT CAN YOU EXPECT?

Each lesson is adapted to the specific needs of the student, but generally includes the following:
  • posture and breathing exercises
  • vocalises (vocal exercises)
  • application of technique covered in the lesson to a song
When students have no previous musical training they will also be coached in basic music theory as necessary. Tips for song interpretation, style, stage movement, career advice, etc. will also be offered as appropriate.

Students can bring in music they want to work on, or will be assigned repertoire appropriate to their vocal range in a variety of styles from the great American songbook, musical theater and contemporary pop music. (Sheet music in your own key is most helpful. If music needs to be transposed, I can refer you to an accompanist.)

Students get the most out of their instruction when they practice. Even ten minutes a day is enough to make progress – it's better to do a short amount consistently then to do a lot every once in a while (just like training at the gym!).

It is highly recommended that students bring in a cassette tape (tape recorder provided) or their own MP3 recorder to record their lesson.

Workshops

Performance Workshop
dates TBA

Become a more confident and expressive performer as you prepare for auditions, gigs, or open mics. In a supportive group atmosphere, focus on aspects of your vocal performance, including:
  • Vocal technique: expand your range, smooth out breaks.
  • Interpretation: become a more expressive performer by making the lyrics your own.
  • Accompanist: learn how to help the accompanist help you.
  • Stage presence: capture and enrapture your audience.
  • Performance anxiety: learn techniques used by professional performers and athletes to use your fear to power your performance.
  • Stage patter: stop losing your audience between songs. Use patter to bond with them.
You will need to have chosen and memorized your material in the correct keys prior to the class (1-3 pieces). Accompanist provided.

Finding The Voice in The Body

Celia Slattery &
Iyengar Yoga teacher Karin Stephan

Dates TBA
The Loft, Porter Square, Cambridge
$50.00

Yoga offers many benefits for singers, including relaxation, awareness, improved posture and breath support. In this afternoon workshop, we'll start with some simple but very profound asanas (physical postures) suitable for everyone, whether you have yoga experience or not.

The yoga will be followed by breathing and vocal exercises to make the connections between body, breath and sound, and we'll end with a group song to experience our newly freed voices!
