Top Ten Ways to Keep Your Voice Healthy

    1. Stay hydrated! The vocal folds like lots of nice moist mucous to stay healthy; drink enough water so that your urine is pale.
    2. Get adequate rest, nutrition and exercise.  Your overall health impacts your vocal health.
    3. Get educated about your voice.  Study with a qualified voice teacher to make sure you are using your voice correctly and always warm up before you sing or before speaking in front of an audience.
    4. Avoid shouting or straining your voice to be heard over noise, such as singing or talking in a large crowd.  Take adequate breaks to rest your voice.
    5. Don’t smoke! Avoid second-hand smoke as much as possible.
    6. Breathe! Make sure you are getting adequate breath support if you are talking or singing for extended periods of time.
    7. Consider using a humidifier – especially in dry, heated rooms.  Or try a “personal inhaler” for steam treatments, especially if you’ve got a cold or allergies.
    8. Many medications are drying: in particular, if you have allergies or asthma, work with a qualified ENT to find the best medications with the least harmful effects for your voice.
    9. Treat GERD (Gastroesophageal reflux disorder). Take a Proton Pump Inhibitor (like Prilosec) if you need it, but there are also dietary and lifestyle modifications that may help.  These include avoiding or limiting spicy foods, alcohol and coffee, not eating right before bedtime and sleeping with the head elevated.
    10. See a doctor if you have any concerns about your voice including; any changes in range, tiredness, soreness, or hoarseness lasting more than two weeks.

However, recently I feel like I have been singing worse than normal, so I wanted to look up how to take better care of my voice. I didn’t know that drinking water helped your voice, but that’s really helpful, thanks!
