R.I.P. Richie Havens

130422191041-richie-havens-09-horizontal-galleryThe African-American folk-singer came to fame with his iconic performance of  Freedom – riffing on the song “Motherless Child” at Woodstock (in part because he had been playing for more than two hours to fill in and had run out of songs!).

Speaking to WBUR’s Tom Ashcroft in 2005, Richie said I have been inspired by the songs I sing personally…we’re still in the part of the becoming (free) where we need ammunition, we need information, we need inspiration…they’re our fuel.  (Listen to the whole interview)

I was lucky enough to see Richie perform at the APAP conference in New York about ten years ago.  I went up to him and told him what an inspiration he had been to me.

Here’s an MP3 of “Hi Flyin’ Bird” – a song that I recorded that I learned from Richie Havens – 07 High Flyin’ Bird.

We can honor him by carrying his message forward.
